(copy) November 4, 1910. Mr. Louis D. Brandeis, 161 Devonshire Street, Boston, Mass. Dear Mr. Brandeis:- In answer to your letter of October 26th, which arrived just as I was leaving for the south, I am enclosing you herewith a statement of the various kinds of work to which the principles of scientific management have been applied. You will understand, of course, that all of the principles of scientific management have not been properly applied in all of these establishments. And you will further understand that the manner of applying these principles must differ with almost every establishment. That is, that each type of work to which these principles are applied calls for a modification of the mechanism which is to be used in their application. I think you also appreciate the fact that the introduction and use of these principles in any one establishment is a progressive one. That is, that beginning with their use in a very restricted way in any one establishment, the field to which they are applied is gradually widened, until it covers all of the operations of the company. And even after the whole works is running under the new principles, the efficiency with which they applied continues to grow through a long term of years. In the average establishment, employing say 1,000 to 2,000 men, it would take from 2 to 4 years before these principles would be in use throughout all of the shops. It is not
