Dear Kempton,
I was glad to find your letter after my return from a week's absence.
I was shocked to read in the newspapers the notice of your father's death. If I had received direct word, I should have gone to his funeral. He was one of my best and most intimate friends, you know. I tried to give a personal tone to my notice of him in the April Bulletin (page 34), but I found it difficult to write as I felt.
