At the time of moving into Boxly, Papa's activities became largely centered upon the reclaiming of that historic spot.  The box hedges, [planted by Wm. Penn] a hundred years before, had grown together so that most of the paths were too obstructed to walk on.  Box bush had never been successfully transplanted, but while his friends were lamenting what seemed its inevitable destruction, Papa devised a scheme by which the box was successfully tunnelled around, packed roots and all in large sections and [successfully] moved.  This operation took months and required specially designed apparatus, which was subsequently patented.  Papa personally superintended much of this work, and was often to be seen in a trench directing a workman how to use a jack, and even working it himself.

The back of the new house faced the broad Wissahicken Valley, but a view of this was shut off by a cliff, which jutted out
